Soap care for smooth leather

Leather soap care has its roots in ancient traditions dating back to the 19th century. This practice became popular because raw soap is gentle and effective for cleaning and conditioning leather without damaging its natural oils and structure – and it remains so to this day.

Leather is an incredibly durable material that, with proper care, can last for many years. Regular leather care is important to maintain its suppleness and resistance to daily wear and tear. For this, we recommend our unique cleaning soap, a 100% natural care product that contains no salts, lime, or minerals – and we are proud of that.

If you decide to treat your leather with soap, you should ensure that the soap has a high fat content of about 80%, is acid-free, and plant-based. micare cleaning soap is the perfect solution. Please note that the sponge will never be completely clean during cleaning. Once the dirt is removed and color transfer appears on the sponge, the treatment is complete.

How to clean and care for your smooth leather:

Before you begin, you should have the following ready:

  • micare cleaning soap
  • a clean, soft brush
  • and a large, soft cloth, preferably microfiber.
  1. Before you begin, remove loose dust, sand, or hair with a dry, soft cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.
  1. Moisten the included Oeko-Tex certified sponge, wring it out lightly, ensuring it no longer drips.
  1. Apply the soap to the sponge and lather it by pressing it in your hand.
  1. Work the soap foam into the smooth leather in circular motions. Always work on and finish one area at a time before moving on.
  1. Wipe off any soap residue remaining after treatment with a dry, soft cloth. A soft brush can help reach all seams.

If necessary, rinse the sponge during cleaning and create new conditioning foam. We recommend soap treatment 2-3 times a year.

If you store leather near windows with direct sunlight, under strong heat sources such as spotlights, or near radiators, it can dry out more quickly. In such cases, expect to treat it four times a year. Generally, you can see and feel if the leather is dry and needs care. Overtreatment is not recommended.

In rare cases, additional treatment with a leather balm may be necessary. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

The only type of smooth leather that should not be treated with soap is vegetable-tanned natural leather (undyed leather).
